What to Expect at Our Poker Room

Our poker room at Casino SkyCity Auckland is inside the main casino, right at the foot of the Sky Tower in central Auckland. It operates every day with different weekday and weekend hours, covering both cash tables and regular tournament play. If you are looking for structured, face-to-face poker in New Zealand, this is effectively the main live room in the city, and it is a proper dedicated area rather than a single table pushed behind the machines.

To sit down in a game you need either a SHOW by SkyCity card or a valid Premier Rewards card. You can sort that online on the SkyCity website before you arrive or pick one up on site in a few minutes. As required by New Zealand casino rules, all gaming areas, including poker, are restricted to guests who are 20 years or older.

Independent reviews over the years describe our poker room as comfortably fitted, with several tables running and regular games spreading across different stakes. On Friday and Saturday nights, it is normal to see waiting lists for the more popular levels. Turning up a bit ahead of peak time usually makes life easier if you have a specific session in mind.

Poker Room Hours

The poker room does not open on Christmas Day or Good Friday. On ANZAC Day, we close between 3:00 am and 1:00 pm. There can be occasional changes on other public holidays or special dates as well, so a quick check with us before you travel is usually worth it. Outside of those statutory closures, the main SkyCity Auckland casino floor itself operates 24 hours a day.

Cash Games: Stakes and Buy-Ins

Our regular cash games focus mainly on No Limit Texas Hold’em across several blind levels, with Pot Limit Omaha added at selected times. Typical structures look like this:

All limits are listed in New Zealand Dollars. Rake is taken at 10% of the pot and is capped at NZD $15 per hand on the $2/$3 and $5/$5 tables. On top of that, an extra NZD $1 is removed from each raked pot in eligible games and placed into the Royal Flush jackpot pool. Only Texas Hold’em cash games are part of this Royal Flush promotion. For higher-stakes tables, rake caps and jackpot eligibility can change, so we always suggest confirming details with the floor staff on the night.

On a usual evening you can expect between four and six tables to be active. At peak times it is common to see lists for some games. One practical habit that works well here and in most poker rooms: if you are driving in specially for a certain blind level, call ahead to check if that table is open and how long the list is. It saves a trip if that game is not running.

Tournaments

We run poker tournaments on a regular basis, although buy-ins, formats and start times do rotate over time. Based on verified schedules, the room has offered the following tournament types:

3. Satellite tournaments
4. Freeroll events

Buy-ins usually start at around NZD $15 on the smaller events and go up to around NZD $500 for larger or special tournaments. Entry into tournaments is usually linked to having a Premier Rewards card, so it is worth sorting that early. Getting Started: First Visit to the Poker Room

If you are planning your first poker session with us, the process from arrival to taking a seat is quite straightforward.

Step 1 Head to the SkyCity Auckland complex on the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets in the Auckland CBD.

Step 2: If you do not already hold one, visit our customer service area and collect a SHOW by SkyCity card or a Premier Rewards card. Bring valid photo ID that shows you are at least 20 years of age.

Step 3 Make your way to the poker room inside the casino. If you are unsure of the route, any member of our floor staff can point you in the right direction.

Step 4: Check in with the poker room staff. They will let you know what games are currently spreading, which stakes are active and whether there are open seats or if you need to join a waiting list.

Step 5 Decide which game and blind level you want to play. Before you sit down, confirm the exact buy-in range and the rake structure with the dealer or the floor team so you are totally clear.

Step 6: Take your seat and buy chips at the table using cash. At present, cash purchases are the standard way to get chips for the poker room.

Step 7 Hand your SHOW by SkyCity or Premier Rewards card to the dealer before the first hand is dealt. Providing your card is a requirement for participation.

Step 8: Once your chips are in front of you and your card has been recorded, you are all set to start playing.

Joining a Tournament Session

Tournament entry has a few different steps compared with walking straight into a cash game, but the flow stays simple.

Step 1 Before you visit, check the latest tournament information at poker.skycity.co.nz or call us on 09 363 6000 to confirm what is running.

Step 2: Make sure you already hold a valid Premier Rewards card, because tournament registration is tied to it.

Step 3 Plan to arrive at the poker room before registration closes. Late entry periods will differ from one event to another, so cutting it too fine is not ideal.

Step 4: Register for the event with our floor staff and pay your buy-in amount in cash. You will receive your seat number and starting stack details at that point.

Step 5 Take the allocated seat in time for the tournament start. The blind structure, level lengths and any breaks will be provided on signage or announced at the table.

Step 6: Play continues through the field until the final table. The prize pool and payout information is confirmed and visible at registration.

Other Poker Variants on the Main Floor

Alongside the peer-to-peer poker room, we also spread several house-banked poker-style games on the main table games floor. These include Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Caribbean Stud Poker, Traditional Poker and Royal Poker Progressive. Each of these table games has its own betting limits and jackpot arrangements.
